Portofino Watches
| The International Watch Company (IWC) is a Swiss company, founded by an American. Florentine Jones made the decision in the 1860s to establish a manufactory in Switzerland. In so doing, he was able to take advantage of the Swiss watchmaking expertise and lower wages of the workers. Jones was not well-funded, however, and he eventually had to give up control of the company. Over the years, the company changed ownership many times and experienced a veritable roller-coaster of success and failures. Today, however, the IWC is a strong participant on the world stage of luxury timepieces. | |
Portofino WatchesThe Portofino Chronograph was designed for devotees of extremely elegant watches that permit the recording of intermediate and aggregate times. Despite containing 233 mechanical parts and 25 jewels, the movement is only an astonishing 3.7 mm in height. Nevertheless, the Portofino Chronograph offers a whole range of methods of measuring short periods of time: the large seconds hand measures the seconds within any given minute, while two smaller subdials show the time measured on a 30-minute counter and on an hour counter up to twelve hours. It would be as inappropriate to spend too much time talking about the Portofino Automatic as it would be to give it more than three hands: hours, minutes and seconds. The Portofino Automatic is rounded off by a discreet date display, and all powered by the 30110-calibre mechanical automatic movement. The new Midsize version compresses the Portofino to a mere 34mm. Needless to say, all the attributes familiar from the Portofino family remain unchanged: discreet elegance, distinguished good looks and a dial that is clear and easy to read. | ![]()
